Fine Art Ceramics (With Guest Curator Summer)

by Violet on December 17, 2009

(Curator’s Note: Each time Summer of Ottoman provides us with an exhibit, I swear I get a little smarter. Her well-trained eye sees fine art in a way Beatrice and I never could. Digging up things we would most likely overlook, she illuminates them with her Etsy Archaeologist’s flashlight and leaves me with a better understanding of art in general. Enjoy this month’s edition!)

Fine Art Ceramics (With Guest Curator Summer)

Okay, so, ceramics. Again, I’m digging into interesting fine art territory here because most ceramicists make work that is purely functional…which, if it’s clever and streamlined, I love it. Case in point, Etsy does not have a “ceramics” subcategory under Art; it’s a main category – “Ceramics and Pottery.” So, fine art ceramicists that have content in their work, have to pigeon-hole themselves in the sculpture subcategory under Art or in the Ceramics and Pottery category. This makes things a little tricky and my job finding fine art ceramics difficult. A little adjustment of making a subcategory of “ceramics” under the main Art header would be perfection!

So, if you’ve been following my posts, you know that I did indeed dig up some really interesting work….

When you think of fine art ceramics and Etsy, you may think of ArtMind ArtMind’s specialty is mini art feelings. For example, Touched – 2 – Mini art feeling.

Here’s a partial description about these pieces:

“This ceramic art object is part of my ‘99 feelings’-project.
It derives from a project I did many years ago reflecting my self-portrait.
I called it ‘how the outside can tell how you feel inside’.
I started out with 9 feelings and then I suddenly thought of making 99 of them…
I like the fact that the number is uneven and that it leaves at least one feeling to complete to 100. That one unfinished feeling to make 100, represents for me all the feelings I haven’t covered and that it can be anything…”

Next up, Me.la.bo. I love her part animal, part human pieces. Cute and eerie at the same time. How about Deerman at Attention?

Melabo also has multi-headed totems to fit your (and my) bizarre taste as well.

Okay, Calcification series part two virtual exhibition by almapottery is simply poetic:

Not only is it poetic, but check out this fantastic description:

“I just had a great idea.
in normal circumstances the artist will isolate himself and work at his project, get it done ,find a gallery have a show and that’s it, one night of chatting with people.
I believe artists who love etsy have the interaction with people somewhat higher on their priorities. Don’t worry I’ll get to my idea soon.
I will make my project and sell each piece for a minimal amount of money as soon as is done but:
you have to promise CROSS YOUR HEART
that you will send me something about the piece in the next year. It can be a picture of anything, anywhere ,anybody ,it can be text.
I will put it all together in a gallery online and we will celebrate our virtual opening with the best drinks around. I’ll take care of those pictures :) .
this way we will change the shift about the sculptures ,the show will be about you, the person who has the piece which is the part that always lacks in the usual way of doing things and the part that interest me the most.
who are you and why do you like my work? how are we connected?”

Staceyrchinn has wide variety of fine art in her shop and this is one of them: Pillow Talk. It’s not strictly ceramic, but I like how she combines ceramic pieces with other items without visually watering down the ceramic part of the work.

Oh, how I love the work of Ricochet Studio! It’s hard to pick just one piece from the shop, but here goes. Sharpener…what can I say, I love old school (literally).

If you’re wanting a punch of color (I do love the simplicity of the white of porcelain, is it obvious?), here it is…SERENA Ltd. Ed 75 by Elke Hutchens. Ah, that glaze!

That’s it for this round. See you soon!

This is an excellent selection—bravo. I’ve watched ArtMind and Melabo for some time now; it seems Melabo was the pioneer of those excellent ceramic hybrids, if I’m not mistaken. Almapottery’s idea is very intriguing; when one parts with an original artwork, there is often that feeling of where has it gone? where is it now? what life is it living? To seek to track that could end up very fulfilling—part of you isn’t just disappearing into a void.

WOW that last piece especially, with the bright red. I want that.
