Jellyfish: Art of the Sea

Violet and I were driving through downtown Portland when she said, “Have you seen those amazing glass jellyfish encased in marbles?” Indeed, I had not. The first thing I did when I got home was take a peek, and these are every bit as amazing as Violet told me they were. Stunning work, West Coast Glass.

Those marbles are the inspiration behind today’s exhibit. There are few creatures so inherently exquisite as the jellyfish: their translucent bodies, their long flowing tentacles, their vast array of colors. Art in living form.

Jellyfish: Art of the Sea

Sea Glass Creations‘ “Sea Creature” necklace looks to me like a sea glass jellyfish with beautiful sterling silver tentacles. Doubt it stings, though.

I’m endlessly crazy about Danielle Rizzolo‘s depiction of a jellyfish gang, done in oil paint on a wood plaque.

Gifts and Stars makes these decorative jellyfish out of real sea urchins. Says the artist: “With white wire the jelly fishes are completed and will be swimming around your house or hanging on your Christmas tree!”

Fantasy Plants also uses sea urchins to craft jellyfish, but hers are paired with living plants to make a striking statement. A tiny exotic air fern makes the perfect tentacles.

Mark Kaplan takes a great abstract look at our sea creature du jour in this pair of sterling silver earrings aptly named “Jellyfish.”
