Felted Acorns: Jewels of the Oak

by Curator Beatrice on September 24, 2009

Acorns are truly the harbinger of Autumn. Squirrels nibble on them like starving, crazed creatures, and children bring them home by the pocketful. For our favorite Etsy artisans, the most popular way to showcase this nutty gem appears to be with needle and felt. Join me on this homage to the needle-felted acorn in all its wondrous variations.

Felted Acorns: Jewels of the Oak

One of the clear leaders in the felted acorn pack is truLuxe. I’m loving their simplicity here in all the colors of the rainbow:

She adds a twist to her original felted acorns by putting them on a wire and dusting the caps with glitter. If Beatrice could keep house plants alive, she would totally put one of these in each of them. No worries, though; I’m sure I can find plenty of other uses!

Two Left Hands combines felt and acorn caps, too, but with an entirely different result.  “Apple Garland Mossie” is wearing a skirt of silk flower petals, a hand embroidered top, and an acorn cap. This little fairy is ready to party.

This is truly one of those pieces you have to see to believe: Dear Dodo has created a felted acorn with a “small antique bisque doll head that was found in the grounds of a closed down porcelain factory in Germany.” Absolutely incredible.

How about a little set of felted acorns that are actually a miniature treasure box in disguise? Knot Sew Cute has made these beauties with removable lids:

Christinas has put a clever spin on the felted acorn by having them don mustaches, lips, and other hilarity in her set of Acorn Gals and Pals postcards. How ginormous would your smile be if you found this waiting for you in your mailbox?!

Time to swoon, Stalkers. Please meet Mother Oak Leaf, Rosemary for Remembrance’s combination of acorns and wool. Mother Oak Leaf is cuddling her little baby acorn! What a good Mommy. I know a few little girls who would wear this necklace nonstop.

The artist behind Drawing Room has some mad needle felting skills. Who would have thought that an acorn cap would be the perfect place to capture the simple beauty of a silhouette?

Dream Child Studio has an amazing assortment of Waldorf inspired acorn dolls. Why can’t I can’t find an acorn cap big enough for my head? These woodsy little twins are a lucky pair.

The final piece in our felted acorn exhibit is this beautiful statement necklace by pirilamporiscado. Isn’t the salmon colored white-capped acorn just the perfect centerpiece for this unique merino wool beauty?

Take advantage of the season, Stalkers. Go for an acorn hunt. I know I enjoyed mine today!

Best,

Curator Beatrice

I love the felted acorns from truLuxe! I saw them a while ago and I’m trying to figure out how to incorporate them into my wedding as my cake topper is of Squirrels made by etsy seller Fliepsiebieps. Great finds!

The Apple Garland Mossie is exquisite! I once made fairies with my little girls using acorns for hats, but they were nothing like that. Such artistry!

Ooohh! What a great collection of acorns! Mine aren’t felted, but thought I’d share my paper creations, in the spirit of acorns… http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=31373790

I am totally enamored with the felted acorn that has the little dollhead embedded in it. It is so incredibly unique and fascinating. I just love it! What an interesting way to merge to entirely different creations.
