When I first saw the work of artist Emma Kidd, the genius behind Benconservato, I was quite genuinely taken aback. There is an other-worldly quality to her work that is almost dream-like: shifting boundaries, strange creatures, unusual pairings.
The piece above, titled “Monkey Portrait,” is an original oil painting on a rounded-corner canvas. But Emma is an artist inclined to work in many mediums. Take, for example, the following illustration called “Wind Powered Biosphere,” done in ink and gouache.
Another gouache piece, this one by the name of “Sleep Walker Monster,” is an exact replica of something that, I swear, lived under my bed from the ages of 5 to 7. Little Beatrice was terrified of this guy, but the adult Beatrice has come to find him endearing and, admittedly, she misses him a bit.
Perhaps it’s these less traditional renditions of animals and her use of monsters and mythical-like creatures that really speaks to me. The 12 “mini monsters” below would be stunning as a set together in a child’s room. Or terrifying, depending on the child. Fine, I want them for my room.
What I find most admirable about Benconservato, though, is that Emma has pulled off what only the finest Etsians can: she has a wide variety of work (originals, prints, sewn cuffs, zines, illustrations, etc.), but it all stands together clearly as a collection. Each piece clearly comes from Ms. Kidd’s distinct point of view and bears her unique artistic style, regardless of how varied it seems from the previous piece.
From monsters to bears: take a look at “Bear in China,” a digital print of a gouache painting done over a page from a Chinese calendar.
Emma’s pieces do not ignore the conceptual aspect of visual art, either. One of my favorite listings is a professionally printed postcard of the print “The Last Book.”
Curator B: Could you explain where your shop name comes from and how you chose it?
My shop name originates from when I made jam for a living on top of working in hospitality (which, at that time I honestly thought I wanted to do mainly that). I had been to Italy and had a love affair with learning the language (try to get me to speak it now, appalling!). So it was “ben conservato” which means “well preserved”. I always stuck the two words together. I liked the name so much, I just continue to use it.
Curator B: Please give us a brief bio of your life and career in the arts. When did you first know that you were an artist?
I supposedly always drew and painted. I always wanted to be in the “arts” somehow. I liked dancing and acting etc. But this one suits my hermit, timid side more. I knew when I just couldn’t give it up and was getting enough recognition to not. I always did it no matter what I was doing for “work”. Except now I am a lot more motivated to be in exhibitions and working in all my free time, which I can’t say I did in the past.
Curator B: How long have you been selling on Etsy? What made you decide to set up shop there?
The big Etsy question. I am sure, in the earlier days of Etsy, I tossed up whether I wanted to sell like that. Paying fees, if the site was worth the fees. I bought things before I started selling. I have been registered since December 2006. It is the best site in my opinion now for traffic and how it is known.
Curator B: What/who are your biggest inspirations as an artist?
The internet gives you inspiration overload. But I do get inspired by people I have direct contact with either face to face or virtually. Sometimes it is just their work ethic, sometimes it is their astounding work nearly always all of the above. Some names: Mandy Ord, Eugène Dodeigne, Alain Buyse, Julie Knoblock, Flossy-P, Wil Freeborn (Ghostschool), Penny Eager (pocketcarnival), Heidi Burton, Caroline Gaedechens, David Bessent, Kirsten Klein, Samantha Szaza, Anna-Denise Van der Reijden, Renée French, Marty Harris, Lapin, Laura Martin Ansa, Marina Grechanik, Helena Tay, Samantha Battersby, Jan Allsopp, Lynne Lamb… I’m going to stop there.
Curator B: You seem to work in a variety of mediums–do you have a favorite?
I do like gouache, I like that it can be transparent or opaque. I do use more and more ink again these days too.
Curator B: Could you tell us a bit about your studio/workspace? (If you have a picture that would be great; if not, no big deal!)
Oh no… my little space is a little sad really so no photos. If it is warmer I work outside. I am in the corner of my small living room at the moment. I have attached a photo of my work space in France, it was nice. Very light and roomy at the end there.
Curator B: I know your art is sold and featured quite a bit outside of Etsy; could you tell us a bit about the other places we might find your work?
In galleries? At the moment I am in an exhibition about Ern Malley at the Heide Museum of Modern Art (Victoria, Australia) which is an amazing opportunity. I participate in a variety of moleskine exchanges http://www.flickr.com/groups/moly_x/ , I have some ACEOs at LeeLoo.com.au , I have just been chosen to be in an exhibition of decorated piggybanks… and I am crossing my fingers to get into Finders Keepers (Sydney) in December. Otherwise I am on Lomography.com (grifter is my name) which I also love to play with. Photography was always my first love.
Emma has generously offered to give one lucky Stalker the following Gocco print, one she has not listed in her Etsy shop. This is a rare opportunity, my friends:

To enter, click on over to Benconservato, stalk around in the shop a bit, and then return here to share with us your favorite piece in her shop. Which one really speaks to you? Why? One entry per person, please. The winner will be chosen at random next Sunday, September 13th at 5:00 PST.
Good luck, and happy stalking!

I suppose the chances of #1 winning are just as good as any–right?
I love the mini-monsters, esp. the sea creatures. I think #37 is my favorite! I also really like Frogs in Gold Bubbles!
Thanks for sharing her talents! I do so love that set of monster prints. So cool. But I also am intrigued by Lomography Winter in Northern France Postcard Set. Beautiful images.
Enjoy the day!
Erin
I also love all the mini monsters. They have such friendly yet mischievous expressions. If I have to pick just one, #5 is probably my favorite. I’m also a fan of the lomo prints!
Fire Wolf #69 by Emma Kidd speaks loudly to me! I love it!
one of my favorites is the “over there”. I do not know for sure why it speaks to me. Maybe it is him all cuddled into a cup looking item on the waves with a direction in mind. He has a plan. I also love the watercolor monsters!
I like this woman’s work — thanks for introducing me to her! I’m surprised that I like it — I generally avoid monsters and other ‘black’ subjects.
My most favorite piece, though, is Blue Eyes Etching by Emma Kidd. I have a fascination for eyes and hands.
I’m embarrassed that I didn’t realize Emma Kidd also did photography, and definitely will add something to the list for an upcoming feature on MVSEVM. I really like the “Paris Nord Train Fisheye Photo” set: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=19669978.
“Origami Bear on Deep Blue Mi Tentes” is lovely: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=25054367
And how excellent is “Frogs in Gold Bubbles”??!: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=8057539

Oh, it’s so difficult to choose! The Monacled Cat is pretty incredible, as are the monsters…and zines! Wonderful!
This Lomo fisheye piece just caught my attention straight away:

My favorite is Iggy the Fierce Tom Cat Monoprint Portrait / original piece . It looks as my cat when she want something to eat
I love this piece: “Fire Heart Beast on Book page” http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=13898435 because it speaks to me as an English PhD student. My favorite books have Fire-Hearted Beasts under the lines that demand conversation, interpretation, written response!
I love the monster series, especially Mini Monster No.5! They have a very Where the Wild Things Are feel…I also love the giveaway prize!
I love Emma’s work, she is so talented! My oldest boy and I looked through her entire shop a couple of days ago, and his favourite was Mini Monster 36 – “because it’s cool”. My long time favourite is The Thought Illustration – the texture, the neutral hues, everything about it appeals to me.
What a lovely interview! I love Emma’s work!
I love this in Emma’ s shop:

I love the Crow (Sibilline) Digital Art Print. I have a thing for crows and ravens, and this looks like a mythical tale waiting to be written. Great art – the whole shop is filled with lovely things. Wonderful giveaway!

I like the mini monsters because of all of their variety of facial expressions! I think it would be really cute to get a number of these and hang them in a row or as a gallery wall.

Minimonster 52 looks like my cat!

I like the Ern Malley Spread Two from Screen Printed Book by Emma Kidd.

I fell in love with mini-monster #9. Something within it just makes me giddy to look at!
It’s hard to choose, because many are charming, but I had to choose, so I did!
I picked the Hatted Man Original Illustration-they are all very unique
My pick is Origami Bear on Deep Blue Mi Tentes. It reminds me of my husband. He always makes me smile too.
Fantastic feature! It’s so hard to pick only one, but the ‘origami bear’ is making me smile this morning. And ‘a drift’ has been a favourite of mine for a while.
I really love the “golden deer” and “sloth”. I like the leaves growing out of the sloths back. To me it shows how everything is the same even though it’s different and we all are essentially at the core the same life force.
Oostduinkerke Diana Pinhole Photograph by Emma Kidd appeals to me most

Ooh, I love this work! Yet another Etsy shop to add to my bookmarks (my poor dwindling PayPal account).
These prints remind me of some of the doodles I make, and also of some of the characters from one of my favorite movies, Spirited Away. I like Crow (Sibilline) since I have a fondness for the crow and its tricky and solitary nature.
I really love the Lomo SuperSampler Ferris Wheel Photo http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=15280253
the colors just caught my attention, and I love ferris wheel photos.
Thank you!

Really cool art! I love “Gold Striped Monster”
I like “They Used This Boat”- it’s like the book is sailing out of the text of the page and coming to life.
Family Unique Gocco Print.
I love that this is titled “family unique”….kind of like my odd ( in a very good oddness way) little family.
We are very unique in the way we live and our views on life in general.
The family in this print also resembles our 3 furbaby jack russells.
I love this little monster in his boat, http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=28558867 . It makes me wonder where he’s been and where he’s going “over there” !
The yellow cat monster print immediately caught my eye in your post and I love the postcard size in her shop!
so many funl pieces to choose from! My favorite though would have to be “over there”. It would look so lovely in my studio (;

I would love to have the Ern Malley Affair Screen Printed 16pp Book. I have 3 spreads already and love them. But I can´t afford the whole book. That would be really great.
But then I also love the prints on old book pages.
