An Ode To Basset Hounds

by Violet on September 8, 2009

When Poppy was a baby, I would sit in my blue striped rocking chair nursing her in the middle of the night.  The world outside was dark and quiet and everyone else was asleep.  Everyone, that is, but a neighborhood Basset Hound that I could hear baying at the moon.  No doubt other people found it annoying but the sound of that dog was a comfort to me; I felt sure he was keeping us company during those long, sleepless nights.  Each time I see a Basset Hound, I am transported back to that rocking chair, next to the moonlit window, with a tiny baby in my arms.  To say thank you for those memories, I created  this tribute to the Basset Hound.

An Ode To Basset Hounds

What are Basset Hounds doing when they aren’t howling at the moon?  According to Ronni of Designing Fairy:  Blogging, of course!

Chet Phillips Illustration is a shop full of fun digital art.  This print made with Painter software is meant to emulate the feel of a Japanese wood block print.  Loving the lines of the sturdy, stylized dog.  (And if you’re wondering, the wall banner says “Dog Lover” in Japanese while the characters in front translate to “Dog That Does Tricks”.)

Eva Designs placed a Basset Hound pendant on a handmade antiqued copper charm necklace.  Basset Hound + Heart Charm=Happy Curator.

Every time I see this next portrait, I have to stop myself from reaching out my hand to smooth that doggy brow.  In artist Pam Tanzey’s own words, “You are invited on this warm spring morning to take refuge under the palm tree, wildflowers all. This is Phoebe, my beautiful dirty nose from digging wild child. I wanted the sense of sharing her world as if you are lying on your stomach right in wildflowers with her.”

The appeal of our floppy eared friend is all-encompassing.  From gentle watercolors, we move to bright, graphic pop art.  What’s better than a single Basset Hound?  Three Basset Hounds!  This framed trio print is from Bao Studio.

I had such a good time poking around My Favorite Mirror. Everything is witty,  colorful, and just a wee bit left of center.  (I kind of feel like she lives inside my head…scary!)  Her art prints are super fun, but none tickles me so much as the royal Basset Hound.

Well, you knew Schmetz Petz was going to show up here again, right?  (Remember the chickens at the coffee shop?)  I had a rough time choosing from his Basset Hound prints.  Almost went with the one playing bagpipes, but finally decided on the Basset Hound Taking a Shower.

Finally, my Basset Hound Stalking led me to what has quickly become a new favorite shop.  Sharon Montrose photographs animals of all shapes and sizes.  Her stark images are compelling and breathtaking.  I present to you her Basset Hound puppy.

Happy Stalking!
