William Shakespeare wrote that “One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.” It’s a moving and simple sentiment, isn’t it? And nothing fits the bill better than a well-made terrarium. Terrariums are little touches of nature, little natural worlds captured and held inside clear containers so that we can be reminded of the importance and simplicity of the earth everyday.
A Touch of Nature
Made by Mavis offers a very classic moss terrarium in a beautiful glass pedestal container. A small taste of water every few weeks is all you need to keep this happy and growing:
The thing I love most about terrariums is the myriad of ways in which they can be changed and personalized. This terrarium is home to a family of owls, thanks to its creator Dew Garden Crafts.
Looking for something for a modern home or office? I love the clean square lines of Warm Country Meadows‘ simple terrariums filled with a particularly lush moss; they could add quite a punch to an otherwise bland space.
Greenbriar‘s “Fairy Toadstool” terrarium consists of moss growing on rocks and bark, topped with adorable handmade mushrooms.
I can’t even begin to tell you how much I adore another terrarium by the same seller, called “Green Meadows.” Greenbriar explains, “This spectacular moss terrarium will make a statement sitting anywhere in your home or office. Let the scene of hilly meadows and cairn piles wisk you away for a peaceful hike through the Scottish Highlands.”
Here in the Pacific Northwest, it often feels like a veritable lichen infestation. It would be safe to say I am positively smitten by the stuff. (Fast Facts by Curator Beatrice! Lichen is a mixture of fungus and algae in a perfect symbiotic relationship, and is an indicator of good air quality.). Naturally, I swooned when I clicked on Beadstyle‘s lichen and moss terrarium:
Now, if you happen to be a lover of both lichen and a good cup of tea, have I got the perfect terrarium for me you! Greenspot has made a terrarium inside a hand-blown tea pot, and the ceramic tea cup inside is planted with lichen. Brilliant.
Okay, terrarium lovers! Weigh in. What have I missed? I’d love for you to share your mossy little finds.
Best,
Curator Beatrice

There is something really soothing about terrariums, especially combined with the lovely photography shown here. The first picture is especially nice with the green dog. So cute!
Thanks for including my owl terrarium. Terrariums are so addictive, forget shoes- it the terrariums that get me!
That last one is the BOMB! I love that the teacup overfloweth with lichen. I am a black thumber…but I think that a terrarium is something that I could keep alive! Thanks! Enjoy the day! Erin
After painting the box base, cover with lollipop sticks, add fluffy grass, cardboard flowers, butterflies and bees. Nature Made
What a beautiful collection of terrariums! But they are also super fun to make yourself out of items you can practically find around the house!

After lusting over terrariums for the past couple of years I finally bought one for my friend. They just moved to Ontario and it seemed like such a cheerful way to add a little green into their new house come fall and winter! Got it at http://www.mossopotamia.etsy.com love the name!
Another favourite terrarium seller would be doodlebirdie: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=29881724
