In Stitches

by Violet on June 15, 2011

I started to put together an exhibit of random things that I like, but when I selected the first two things from my favorites, I realized they shared a similarity: neither were made of fabric, but both had stitching. I decided to run with that theme and found a collection of items where stitching turns up in unexpected places.

In Stitches

I figured a shop called Stitched Cards would have something for this exhibit, and I was right! This charmer is called Even Sasquatch Loves and it’s made entirely of thread and paper.

A handformed black stoneware pendant has been stitched with embroidery thread then attached to a copper chain. The unexpected combination of materials gives this necklace from Kristen Ciccarelli a wonderfully urban feel.

Agnes P Designs starts with found materials and repurposed papers, then collage and sews them into “remade” landscapes. These bright and colorful modern collage cards come in a set of three and are entitled Sydney, for the city that inspired them.

This is one of a pair of Sunburst Earrings from Ibby and Rufus. The pink and orange embroidery both contrasts with and enhance the wood grain in the tiger ebony.

I love the sparse simplicity of In Queue’s modern embroidery stitched card. Perfect to use as a greeting card or framed as a piece of art, you can choose from a dozen thread colors.

Cristina Berretta turned her original watercolor painting into a mixed media art piece by hand stitching circles of decorative origami paper using a variety of thread colors. These additions add texture and depth to the sunflowers.

Finally, this simple image from Tastes Orangey evokes a multitude of feelings. Entitled Undress, it captures that weary and freeing moment at day’s end. The image is printed on matte paper, which is sewn with thread onto a piece of textured watercolor paper giving it a substantial feel.

Happy Stalking!
